Our Approach
We chose to study the Speedo LZR Racer as our ISearch2 topic because we felt that it incorporated many of the Innovation course aspects and has had huge industry impact despite the longer term political and economic trends negatively affecting their market dominance.
We have assessed the Speedo LZR Racer as a successful innovation through highlighting it’s standing in the competitive racing industry (Industry impact and SWOT analysis) and also through primary research with potential consumers of this product (Case studies). With one of our members having owned one of these suits, we can give some first-hand insight in order to support our claims.
Our initial plan was to conduct a structured, qualitative research interview in order to elicit our primary research from our interviewee (Bryman et al, 2003, p.114) so that we could respond to the answers that were given in order to create a supportive feature for our innovation topic. We chose the person that we knew would be able to give us the most viable feedback for this innovation and chose the most convenient solution for him, which meant that we sent out a self-completion questionnaire to the vice-captain of the University swim team.
To make our approach as interactive as possible, we also included a voting poll for viewers of our website to put forward their own views. Given the widespread debate surrounding the LZR Racer and the swimming industry, we feel this really adds value through open discussion.
Our final approach in analysing the Speedo LZR Racer was a self-reflection by the OACAS team on how the innovation has affected our learning journey and of the course as a whole.
